People Used Exploding Combs

In the early 1900s, a new affordable material called celluloid was used to make hair combs. But there was a major catch—it was highly flammable and could spontaneously combust near heat. People were literally setting themselves on fire while grooming.

A few unfortunate users even died from these surprise explosions. All in the name of style, celluloid combs proved beauty could be both deadly and dramatic.
