Kanamara Matsuri – Japan
Also known as the “Festival of the Steel Phallus,” this celebration in Kawasaki honors fertility, safe childbirth, and… giant penises. Gigantic phallic statues are paraded through the streets while candies, souvenirs, and costumes all follow the same rather unmissable theme. It’s deeply rooted in Shinto beliefs and old stories of protection against STDs.
What makes Kanamara Matsuri stand out isn’t just its NSFW visuals but its bizarre blend of sacred and silly. Tourists come for the shock value, but locals revere it as a celebration of life, sexuality, and community health. The combination of spirituality and surrealism is enough to make anyone say WTF—in the most respectful way possible.
