Fiesta de Santa Marta de Ribarteme – Spain

Welcome to the festival for people who’ve had near-death experiences—where the survivors literally climb into coffins and are paraded through town. Held in Las Nieves, Spain, this celebration honors Saint Martha and the gift of survival. It’s equal parts gratitude and grave humor.

As living people lie in caskets, family members carry them through the streets to the sound of funeral dirges. It’s bizarre, moving, and oddly uplifting. While it may seem macabre, the festival is about appreciating life after close calls. And yes, it’s one of the only places in the world where people say “I’m alive!” while inside a coffin.
