Jarramplas Festival – Spain
In the village of Piornal, a person dressed as the devil-like Jarramplas marches through the streets while locals pelt them with turnips. Yes—turnips. The outfit is padded, but the barrage is brutal. It’s a symbolic ritual to punish evil and drive away misfortune.
Being Jarramplas is a badge of honor—volunteers wait years to don the costume. The pounding from thousands of flying root vegetables is intense, but the meaning behind it is deep-rooted. It’s painful, primal, and definitely one of Spain’s most unforgettable WTF festivals.
