A mysterious moment captured from high above
The Giant Sinkhole That Swallowed a Building in Guatemala City
When you hear about sinkholes, you probably picture some terrifying act of nature, right? But the thing is, they ain’t always natural. Sometimes, they’re man-made. Check out this massive sinkhole that popped up in a residential area of Guatemala City back in 2010. This bad boy was big enough to swallow a whole freakin’ building! Turns out, busted sewage pipes and rainwater drains were likely to blame. So, basically, human screw-ups caused this whole mess.
This sucker was estimated to be about 18 meters wide and 100 meters deep! The heavy rains from Tropical Storm Agatha were the final straw, causing the easily eroded ground made of volcanic pumice to collapse. While it’s technically not a natural sinkhole, the drone footage of this crazy scene is something else. This picture really gives you a glimpse into the unexpected outcomes that can happen when nature and humans mix it up.
