The Ink-and-Dash Squid Move
Squid have one of the simplest yet most effective escape tactics: the ink-and-dash. When threatened, they squirt a cloud of ink that temporarily blinds or confuses the predator. Some species even release a blob of mucus-filled ink called a “pseudomorph” that looks like the squid itself, buying them extra time to jet away.
This clever sleight of tentacle is just one of many survival strategies in a squid’s playbook. Some squid can also change color in milliseconds thanks to chromatophores in their skin, making them almost invisible in open water. It’s predator evasion via smoke bomb, ninja-style.
