Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge (New Zealand)

The Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge is located on the Kawarau River in the South Island of New Zealand. The bridge is mainly used for commercial purposes for bungee jumping and is credited as the site of the world’s first commercial bungee jump. It carries Queenstown Trail runners, bikers and walkers over the Kawarau River.

The bridge is 141 feet above the Kawarau River and is located within a Department of Conservation reserve between Gibbston and the Crown Range Road in the Kawarau Gorge. Designed by Harry Higginson, the bridge was completed in the late 1880s and became a major access route to the Central Otago goldfields in New Zealand. Today, the Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge is designated as a Category I Historic Place by the National Historic Places Trust and is a commercialized tourist attraction featuring bungee jumping and ziplining.
