Hugo: Man of a Thousand Faces

Hugo, a bald, blank-faced puppet head from the 1970s, was meant to spark creativity by allowing kids to apply various disguise kits—scars, eyepatches, fake mustaches. Instead, the doll looked like a disturbing prop from a horror film, especially with its lifeless glass eyes and expressionless face.

Children often found Hugo unnerving, as if staring into a mannequin in a haunted house. The realistic scars and grotesque makeup kits added to the unsettling effect. Rather than inspiring fun, Hugo encouraged a creepy fascination with disfigurement, making playtime feel more like a macabre experiment.
