Xoloitzcuintli

The Xoloitzcuintli—pronounced “show-low-eats-QUEENT-lee” and often called the Xolo or Mexican Hairless Dog—is an ancient breed revered by the Aztecs as a spiritual guide for the dead on their journey to the underworld. Known as the “dog of the gods,” the Xolo is a vigilant watchdog and an intensely loyal companion. Its tough, smooth skin and sharp intelligence make it a truly unique breed.

That deep loyalty, however, comes with a tendency to be territorial and overly protective. With its striking, mythical appearance, the Xolo can seem intimidating, though it doesn’t have to be—if properly trained. This breed requires consistent, expert-level training from a very young age, which is why many professionals recommend it only for experienced dog owners.
