Strychnine as a Tonic

Strychnine, a deadly poison used in rat traps, was once added in small doses to tonics and pills as a stimulant. Doctors believed it strengthened the heart, stimulated digestion, and cured fatigue. It was even prescribed to athletes and soldiers for an extra jolt of energy.

But strychnine is toxic even in tiny amounts. Symptoms of overdose include convulsions, respiratory failure, and death. Over time, its inclusion in “pep” pills and energy drinks caused more harm than good, and governments eventually banned it from over-the-counter use. Today, no one would think of drinking poison to stay alert—unless it’s in a very disturbing video game.
