Turning the question around

Carter noticed a subtle shift in Tara’s expression as his question seemed to affect her. Her face, which had been blank, now carried a hint of sadness. She glanced over at him for a moment before responding with a question of her own. “What’s an old man like you picking up young girls off the side of the road?” Her large, unblinking eyes locked onto his, and the weight of her words hung in the air.

Caught off guard by her bold reply, Carter was momentarily stunned. He hadn’t expected the girl to turn the tables on him so quickly. His mouth opened, but the words didn’t come out easily. Stumbling over his response, he tried to find something to say, but her sassy tone had thrown him off.
