A Hidden Journey

Over sandwiches and soda, Alan grew quiet for a moment before revealing something that made me sit up straight. “I’ve been working on a few things,” he said softly, eyes avoiding mine. There was an air of secrecy to his tone, like he was confessing something deeply personal. I wanted to press for more, but he quickly pivoted.

Before I could ask further, he changed the subject completely. “Ever tried kayaking?” he asked, completely catching me off guard. The question seemed absurd at first—dangerous, even—but his eagerness was genuine. It wasn’t just about kayaking. It was about showing me he wasn’t who I thought he was.
