In parts of Japan and Southeast Asia, black teeth were once considered a beauty standard. People would dye their teeth with a special lacquer, which also served as a preservative against cavities and decay.
While it might seem strange or even creepy to modern eyes, teeth dyed black symbolized health, elegance, and maturity back then. The tradition has largely disappeared, but it’s still practiced in some small communities today.
