It Was Believed That Worms Caused Tooth Decay

Before modern dentistry existed, many people believed that toothaches were caused by tiny worms that burrowed into the teeth. To “cure” themselves, they would fill their mouths with smoke, believing that it would force the worms out into a bowl of warm water.

This superstitious remedy persisted for years, despite having no scientific basis. Fortunately, science eventually debunked the dental worm myth.
