Centuries ago, houses didn’t have bathrooms, so people kept chamber pots by the bed for nighttime emergencies. In the morning, they either emptied them themselves, or a servant had to do it.

While practical, the stench was unbearable, especially with containers of waste in the bedroom all night. Hygiene standards were surprisingly low, but this was simply a part of daily life.
