In the 1700s, towering hairstyles were a major status symbol, and folks went to extreme lengths to keep those structures in place. The secret? A thick pomade made from lard (pig fat) or mutton fat, which they slathered on like it was hair gel.


The downside was pretty gross: they wouldn’t wash their hair for days, leading to rank odors and even bug infestations. Beauty mighta been flashy, but it definitely wasn’t clean.
