Torso Trimmer
In the 1960s, the Torso Trimmer made waves as the “lazy person’s path to a tiny waist.” It was nothing more than a plastic disc on which you stood and twisted like you were doing the Chubby Checker dance. The idea? That you’d burn calories and tone your abs just by rotating your hips side to side, all while watching TV or talking on the phone.
While twisting does engage the obliques slightly, the Torso Trimmer did little to melt away belly fat. Many users also discovered the disc had zero grip, leading to a number of twisted ankles and spontaneous splits. Though fun in theory, it was ineffective in practice—another gimmick that got shelved once people realized turning in place didn’t equal six-pack abs.
