4. Jussie Smollett

Jussie Smollett was soaring as Jamal Lyon on Fox’s hit *Empire*, with his soulful singing, acting chops, and public activism making him a rising Black LGBTQ+ icon. Fans loved him, awards buzz was building, and bigger opportunities seemed inevitable.
In January 2019, Smollett claimed a hate-crime attack in Chicago. Investigations revealed he allegedly staged it with two brothers he hired. Fired mid-season from *Empire*, he was convicted in 2021 on five counts of disorderly conduct for lying to police. He served jail time, paid massive fines, and has had almost no acting work since. His once-bright career was destroyed by the very spotlight he sought.
